Automotive ignition cables are critical components in the transmission of electrical energy. They transmit the high-voltage current generated by the ignition coils to the spark plugs. The spark is then generated to ignite the air-fuel mixture.

In early ignition systems, each cylinder was equipped with one ignition cable. As automotive technology develops, the cylinders can be independently ignited. Those parts no longer exist in new vehicles.

1. Components

The ignition cable consists of conductive material, insulating rubber, ignition coil connector and spark plug connector.

The insulating material prevents current leakage and protects the internal components from moisture, lubricants, vapors and high temperatures. It is a non-conductive insulating coating.

The connectors have high process requirements. They need to be tightly connected to other ignition system components to prevent current leakage and impurities.

2. Two Common Types

●  Copper core

There are advantages, such as low resistance and a long operating cycle. This type of cable increases the power of the spark. There are also disadvantages, such as poor insulation and hardening after prolonged use or in the cold.

●  Carbon fiber core

It can resist high tensile loads. In addition, the silicone coating ensures good performance in extreme temperatures. On the other hand, it has low spark power compared to the copper core type.

3. Symptoms & Reasons

Poor engine starting (especially in the rain or high humidity)

Sudden breakdown of power device at intermediate or high speed

Reduced engine power and weak acceleration

One or more cylinders are not working properly

Increased fuel consumption and black smoke from the exhaust pipe

Engine stalling

Unstable idle speed

Reasons for these issues can be:

●  During the long-term working or under the influence of temperature difference, micro-cracks are formed in the winding. And these micro-cracks lead to current leakage, which causes the loss of electrical energy.

●  The resistance exceeds the standard value.

●  Faulty ignition coil or defective spark plug.

Carbon deposits in the spark plug will cause a larger electrode gap. As a result, fuel consumption will increase. Spark plugs do not have leakage of electricity. They just may be destroyed by the electricity leaking from ignition cables. In this case, the spark plugs need to be replaced.

4. Test

To test an ignition cable, the following methods are available.

●  Check the product appearance for damage. Cracks, cuts, and burns are all unacceptable. The good ignition cable has a smooth and flat surface. The uniform color is a good sign. The writing on the surface should be clear.

●  Watch for corrosion between the tip of the spark plug and the coil connector.

●  Start the engine and look for the arc. This job can be done at night or in a dark room.

●  Check instructions to ensure proper installation of ignition cables.

●  Pay attention to the clips that hold the cables in the distributor cap. If they are damaged, the parts may slip out.

●  Check the resistance to make sure it is within the specified value.

Here is the resistance measurement of the automotive ignition cable. Set the multimeter to the ohmmeter mode. Remove the cables from the spark plug and ignition coil in the cylinder. Connect the multimeter to the end of the ignition cable and check the value.

If the component is in good condition, the resistance should be in the range of 3.5 to 10 KΩ. The optimum resistance value is usually indicated on the insulator.

5. Suggestions for New Buyers

Long-term use of vehicle ignition cables can lead to excessive internal resistance, which leads to the degradation of electrical conductivity. The external protection material will also deteriorate, which leads to leakage. Therefore, regular replacement is necessary.

Before buying new ignition cables, you can take the ignition coil out of the car and carry it with you to the offline store if you can. You can check whether the cable can be connected tightly with the ignition coil when selecting the product.

The difference in the cable resistance caused by either length or thickness is almost negligible. Even if the wire is thickened many times, it will not bring the essential difference. Some car ignition cables have very large resistance, which is to eliminate radiation and reduce interference.

However, too much resistance will weaken the current and spark intensity. At this point, if you want to reduce the resistance, you can only replace the cable with smaller resistance. But then this will lead to the enhancement of interference radiation. The specific choice depends on what you truly need.

Another important indicator of the ignition cable is the insulation performance. As the discharge voltage is very high, if the insulation is poor, it causes the midway discharge. The arc will crawl on the surface of the cable, or it even discharges directly to the metal surface.

It is worth mentioning that the cable with anti-radiation elements is more likely to produce leakage corona. In severe cases, you can smell something like ozone. The light blue halo can be seen in dim light.

These issues can drastically reduce the ignition performance. It is easy to cause fire accidents. Therefore, you should be careful when selecting car ignition cables to avoid subsequent trouble.

6. Reasons for Choosing Delcoribo Ignition Cables

Ignition cables may be parts that work in the most terrible working environment, and they play big roles in the engine. Exposed to too much strain and stress, they need regular inspection. High temperatures, vibrations and fuel corrosion speed up the ageing and shorten the service life. New components are ready for replacement.

Delcoribo has such good ignition cables for sale. Our products are available for sufficient voltage transmission and minimum energy losses. We have various kinds for most makes and models. The stable ignition performance allows the spark plug to work well in the engine compartment.

Smooth spark generation isn’t only beneficial to the combustion. It reduces unnecessary fuel consumption and environmental pollution. Everyone wants to have well-performed ignition cables for their engine. Come and purchase here!
