Starter Drive

The driving force is sent from the engine to the axles. Vehicles need
reliable starter drives to get this job done. Those small but important
parts also play big roles while gear shifting.

When we talk about the automotive starter drive, it is actually the clutch. It transfers mechanical energy between the starter motor and the crankshaft. This crucial component consists of a friction plate, a spring plate, a pressure plate and the power output shaft. It settles between the engine and the transmission device. When the engine works, it transfers the torque stored on the flywheel.

1. Introduction to Starter Drive

The starter drive transfers drive force and torque to the drive wheels in different driving conditions. In the case of semi-linkage, the checker's power input and output allow for a speed difference. In this situation, the right amount of power must be transferred according to the speed difference.

The starter drive has three working conditions: full linkage, half linkage and no-load state. When the engine is working, the pressure plate tightly squeezes in the flywheel friction plate.

At this time, the friction between both components becomes large. The input shaft and output shaft maintain the relative static friction. They have the same speed.

When the vehicle starts, the driver steps on the clutch. The movement of the pedal on this device pulls the pressure plate to lean back. That is, the pressure plate and the friction plate are separated. At this time, the pressure plate and flywheel are not in contact at all. There is no relative friction.

2. Working Principle

The car starter drive plays an important role when the vehicle starts and shifts gears. At this time, there is a speed difference between the first and second shafts of this transmission.

The engine power must be cut off from the first shaft in order for the synchronizer to keep the first shaft speed in sync with the second shaft. After the gear is put in, the first shaft is combined with the engine power through the starter drive, so that energy can continue to be transferred.

The starter drive has an indispensable buffer unit. There are two plates put together. The plates have rectangular grooves. The springs are arranged in the grooves, and when there is a damaging impact, the springs between the two plates are elastic to each other and buffer the external stimulus. This working process effectively protects the engine and clutch.

There are many critical parameters of the car starter drive. The strength of the pressure plate spring, the friction coefficient of the friction plate, diameter and friction plate position are important factors in determining the performance. The greater the stiffness of the spring, the higher the friction coefficient of the friction plate. The larger the diameter, the better performance.

Semi-linkage of starter drive

The non-linkage and full linkage of the starter drive are not tests of driving skills. Some bad habits always occur in the semi-linked state.

The car starter motor need to have a certain semi-linkage to run smoothly. New drivers may have these experiences. Either they stall when starting, or they go out with a shudder. These symptoms happen in the semi-linkage state. Newbies can't handle this situation.

When the car is starting, the second axis of the transmission will also appear to be stationary. We need to depress this thing before putting it in first gear.

3. Problems

In practice, slippage is the most common failure of the starter drive. When the starter is under heavy load, it accelerates wear and tear of gears or runs out of fuel. The bearings can also be damaged. The slippage results in the starter idle while starting, and the engine does not work.

Therefore, If the problem occurs, it is necessary to check and analyze whether the starter is in an idle state. Sometimes the starter can also drive the engine, especially in the case of a high number of warm-ups. It can be judged that the starter drive is slipping. If the engine does not run at all, the clutch is not pushed out, and the pinion cannot engage with the flywheel ring.

There is also a situation due to the early start of the electromagnetic switch power. The electromagnetic switch core travel is too short. In this situation, the starter speed is very high. There is a clear sound of gear impact.

When the ignition switch is released and disengaged from the starting gear, the starter will not stop after the power supply stops. Instead, it will continue to run for a few seconds before stopping.

The electromagnetic switch circuit and transmission mechanism are not properly adjusted. When the motor circuit turns on, the pinion does not engage with the flywheel gear ring.

If the abrasion between the starter drive and the engine flywheel gear ring is severe, it may also lead to abnormalities. It may also be caused by a damaged starter fork, misalignment or dislodged tie rod hook. The starter armature and armature core will be detached.

When the starter works under the magnetic field force, only the armature core turns, and the shaft doesn't. No torque is transferred to the engine, resulting in the starter idling.

In addition, it may also be due to excessive clearance between the ring of the drive gear and the flywheel. Under normal conditions, the engine flywheel and the gear ring are usually interference fit. When the gear ring is loose, the starter only drives the gear ring to turn, but the engine does not run.

4. Reasons for Choosing Delcoribo Starter Drives

Clever drivers take care of all parts in the starting system. They want everything right to keep smooth driving. The starter motor can’t directly transfer energy to the engine. The starter drive is the medium. Delcoribo gains expertise in producing and supplying premium starter drives. Apart from good transferring efficiency, our products possess minimum noises in sophisticated working states.

Starter drives have to work with mechanical force all the time. Inevitable wear and tear can be a major problem. Improved raw material and progressive design prolong the service life. Dirt and corrosion? Don’t worry! Our products can be trusted in harsh environment. They perform well as usual even if you drive in rugged roads or in cold winter.

We have faith in customer orientation, and take pride in offering good service. Everyone can have confidence in Delcoribo when it comes to starter drives.
